Children's program at the church plant

Kata using interactive teaching with the children
On Dec. 21st our good friend Kata provided a wonderful program for children at the church plant; it was also great for people of all ages who were there.  Kata is a missionary with the Hungarian branch of Evangelism Explosion for Kids, and she used interactive teaching, drama, and a handcraft to make a clear presentation of Gospel truth.

Praise the Lord for the Good News that was clearly shared!  Pray that the seeds that were sown will bear fruit in changed lives, to the glory of God.  Lift up the work of Kata and her co-workers with EE- Magyarország as they train workers and reach out to children and families.

Special Christmas event tomorrow

Gingerbread boys and girls will be a part of the celebration
Tomorrow morning we'll be partnering with Kata, a friend from the Hungarian Evangelism Explosion for Kids, and other national friends, to present a special program for children and families at the church plant.

Pray that those will come whose hearts the Lord has prepared to hear this message; ask that the Good News will be clear and well received as we enjoy the drama, the interactive Gospel presentation, the special craft, and the time spent together.

Praise the Lord for this opportunity to share the true meaning of Christmas!

Debrecen prepares for Christmas

The Debrecen city center, aglow with preparations for Christmas
Last week Gary and I took a few minutes to walk in the city center and enjoy the lights and Christmas atmosphere.  It was only a little cool out, so there were a lot of shoppers in the stores and at the booths that line the tram tracks in front of the Great Church.

Pray that as people prepare for Christmas, their minds will also turn to the One whose birthday we celebrate this time of year; pray that they will understand and accept the incomparable gift of the Saviour.

A Taste of American Thanksgiving

Each year in November our Thursday evening coffeehouse outreach features "A Taste of American Thanksgiving," which is an opportunity for many students from around the world to experience this special holiday for the first time.  What a great opportunity it is to not only share a cultural experience, but also to share about the goodness of God!

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving celebration in Tiszafüred
Thanksgiving is not celebrated in Hungary as an official holiday as it is in the US.  Many of the churches do set aside a special Sunday, however, when they come together to give thanks to the Lord for the blessings of the year.

Yesterday the church plant in Tiszafüred hosted such a celebration, and many joined us from sister churches in nearby towns. It was a great encouragement and blessing to praise God together for who He is and all that He has been doing in our lives!

Our friend and church plant group member "Z" gave testimony of the Lord's faithfulness in walking with her and her daughter "T" through very dark days, as T had a long-awaited brain surgery earlier this year.  T has been doing much better since the surgery, but has now begun to have very troubling episodes again. Pray for them especially this Wednesday, November 26, as they will be returning to the doctor in Budapest for some tests and a consultation.  Also pray for church plant member "J," who is losing her sight from glaucoma.  Thank you!

We wish you all a very blessed Thanksgiving!

Struggling father

Farm workers in Hungarian field, summer 2014
I've been chatting today with a Hungarian friend who lives in a small town not far from here.  He is struggling to make ends meet, and he seems to be getting desperate.  The only job he can find, temporary farm work, just isn't enough to pay the bills and provide for his kids.

Please pray for "J." right now, that he will be able to find work that will take care of their needs, and that he will not be discouraged from his spiritual journey toward Christ.  Lift up this seeker and the believers who have been sharing their faith with him.

Also pray for the many other families like this one, who are feeling hopeless and helpless as they see the winter approaching.  May the Lord provide for their material and spiritual needs as only He can!

Urgent prayer needs

Many of our friends here are going through really rough times right now, and we would appreciate prayer.  We know that God is able to walk with them through the trials and to somehow, miraculously, use the bad stuff for good...it's just hard to see that sometimes when we're in the midst of it all.
  • "T" and his family are dealing with a very serious legal issue.  T is a new believer but his family do not know the Lord.  Ask for help in the situation, but also that God will use this to draw them to Himself, uniting them in love as a family.  Ask that T will come through the current discouragement stronger than ever.
  • "J" has recently gone blind in one eye from glaucoma and the other eye is also getting rapidly worse; the doctor gives her no hope for healing.  Pray for her sight, for encouragement, and that this will strengthen rather than damaging her new-found faith. She is also desperate to retire from the bar where she works, but has no other means of supporting herself. Many are watching her reactions during these trials, as she has been very vocal in sharing about the Lord and His faithfulness.
  • "M" and her teenage daughter "D" are walking a dark road, as "D" was recently diagnosed and hospitalized with manic depression.  Pray that she will get the help that she needs, and that through this terrible time they will both come to faith in Christ.
  • Pray for us, also, that we will have wisdom in dealing with these and many other difficult circumstances that we are faced with each day.  Ask that we will remember to live in the joy of the Lord without being overcome with the darkness and despair that so often surround us.  Thank you!

Today in history...Soviets crush Hungarian revolt

As I type this, the nation of Hungary is holding a day of mourning, remembering the tragic events of November 4, 1956.  58 years ago today Soviet tanks rolled in to Budapest and viciously crushed the 12-day-old revolution against Soviet oppression.  Thousands of Hungarians were killed, and nearly a quarter-million fled their homeland.

Pray for Hungarians today both in Hungary and around the world. Ask the Father to comfort them as they mourn; ask that their hearts will turn to the One who gives ultimate victory and hope that can never be taken away.

Happy 130th birthday, Karcag Baptist Church!

The current church building dates back to 1897.
Yesterday we had the joy of spending the afternoon with friends at Karcag Baptist Church, celebrating what God has done over the last 130 years and praising Him for the impact they will continue to have over the coming generations!  The church was totally full, with extra chairs brought in.  Many former members and other friends touched by the church came back to visit from all over Hungary, and from even as far away as Canada.

As I watched the slideshow of photos from across the history of the church and saw the dates beneath, I was stricken with the realization of what was happening during those times in history.  As the faces of my brothers and sisters in Christ flashed onto the screen, I knew that many had suffered very real persecution, had endured extreme trials.

Praise the Lord with me for the faithfulness of those who went on before, for the godly heritage that continues even today.

Pray, as we did together yesterday, that Karcag Baptist Church will continue to be a place where God's people gather to pray, "Speak, Lord, for your servant heareth!"  and in loving obedience reach out to share His love with those in Karcag and the world.

Gary encouraged the people to continue to reach future generations

Among many others, the Karcag Roma Baptist church shared testimonies & music

After lunch, coffee & pastries, there was time for all ages to enjoy the fellowship
The choir's beautiful harmonies of praise brought me almost to tears

Praying for Europe, and thank you

Map of Europe - OpenClipArt.org
The Lord is doing incredible things here in Hungary and all throughout Europe, but whenever God is working, there are also opposition and difficulties...a spiritual battle is going on for the hearts of the people. Prayer is key in all that we do, and we ask for your help.  Please join us in praying daily for the people of Europe!

The personnel in our area are currently praying together using a special forty-day prayer guide; each day has a short Scripture verse tied to a one-sentence prayer...if you would like to join us, download it from my Google Docs here.

Thank you so much for your prayer support, as well as your sacrificial giving through the Cooperative Program and the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering.  We appreciate all of you who pray, give, and come to help.  If you are interested in the possibility of coming as a short-term volunteer, please contact us for details.

Tattoos and piercings welcome

Meeting with ministry partners from Good Sports International
This morning's meeting with friends from Good Sports International once again showed us their passion for ministering to young people where they are in life.  They not only want to provide the kids with sports and fun, they also want them to experience unconditional love and the hope found in Christ.

One of the long-term Good Sports ministries is to orphans in the northeastern Hungarian city of Miskolc.  Because of the distance involved, Good Sports staff and volunteers can only go about once a week to spend time with the kids and have Bible study.  As we discussed this morning, there is a huge need for a new, radically-different type of church there, one which can speak to the needs of these troubled young people. They need to have someone close by who is there for them during the week, as life hits them hard with temptations and despair.

Choir robes, organ music, and long, theological words don't speak to these desperately wounded hearts. We believe they need a different style of church, one prepared to meet their special circumstances.  They need to be shown that God knows and loves them as they are...that Christ understands living in the dirt and pain of this life, but that He can lift them up and give them hope and new life.  Will the Lord send us a church planting partner with tattoos and piercings, who can relate the Gospel message to those who feel thrown away by society?  We don't know yet what God has planned for this new church, but we want to help if we can.  We want to come alongside Good Sports, to pray, to help train leaders, and to stand amazed as the Lord brings about something totally new in Miskolc!

Pray with us:
  • that the Lord will give wisdom in decision-making and show us how we can partner together
  • that He will raise up strong, courageous leaders who will relate well to the kids at the orphanage (tattoos and piercings welcome but optional)
  • that a new church will be birthed in Miskolc, loving and relevant to the hurting & marginalized
"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world."  James 1:27

Native American singer and drummer to visit Hungary

Ralph Zotigh at the Grand Canyon
Pray that the Lord will bring together the scheduling for the volunteer team that will be here July 26 – August 2, and prepare the hearts of those who will hear the gospel.  Ralph Zotigh, a full-blooded Kiowa American Indian, will be performing traditional American Indian vocal and drum music and sharing about the native American culture and his life, including his strong Christian testimony.  Also coming is science and agriculture professor Dr. Curtis Smith. Lift up all those that Mr. Zotigh and Dr. Smith will be interacting with, that their hearts will be drawn to the Lord through what is shared.

Over the past year or so we have asked you to pray for Z and her daughter T from Tiszafüred.  T had been doing much better after her brain surgery, but this Sunday we heard that once again something is wrong.  Pray for healing and hope for her, and for encouragement and help for Z, as this is quite difficult and discouraging.  Ask the Lord to protect Z’s heart, that she would not turn away from seeking after Him.  In addition to her fears for her daughter, she is also experiencing chronic pain herself, which makes it very hard for her to find the strength to go on each day.

Prayer focus article: A Vision for Hungary

Through the slow, dry times when we saw nothing happening in the work here in eastern Hungary, God gave us hope to go on.  Read about the 2002 vision that He's been using all these years to keep the spark alive:

Proud of our city!

If you've ever been to Debrecen or would someday like to, you will love this article and photos of our adopted city:   CNN travel article about Debrecen   Note that the thermal spa it talks about is actually not outside the city, but is right along the tram tracks near the university.  Look it up if you're in town and have a few hours to relax and enjoy the water. :-)

Debrecen is a wonderful place to live and to serve, and we love the people!  Pray that the hearts of these friends will be open to the Gospel message, and that as the Good News takes hold here, the influence of this city will help spread it throughout Hungary, into neighboring countries, and around the world.

Pray for Debbie's Dad

Our teammate Debbie Cobb asks that you pray for her father, Robert Tice, who will be having surgery today at 9 a.m. (Eastern Time).

"[They will] remove suspicious spot(s) from his tongue, and also two in his throat," she writes.  "He has been battling this for about 20 years or so, with several surgeries. We are so thankful that Dad is in the care of a wonderful doctor who keeps a very close eye on him, and acts quickly whenever he sees anything that is not normal. Please pray for a good outcome, good report, and for a smooth recovery. Please also pray for my Mom, Elaine, as she waits, and also as she cares for Dad. Thank you so much for your prayers."

Thank you for lifting up the Tice family as they deal with this situation.

Looking Deeper

Who doesn't love to see the wonderful sights that a trip to Europe offers?   Let's not forget, though, that followers of Christ should look deeper.   Pray for the people of Europe!

Pray for Kimberly

Please lift up teammate Kimberly Hathcock and her family, as she is having surgery on her back right now. Pray that it will go very well, that she will be relieved of the pain she has been having, and that recovery will be quick and complete.  Ask that the Lord will get the glory through it all.

UPDATE:  Praise the Lord!  We have received word that the surgery went well.  Thank you so much for praying!  Please continue to pray for her as she recovers, and that through this experience opportunities will arise to share about the Lord with medical staff and others.

"T" still doing well / month of prayer

We're very thankful to report that T. is still doing well after her surgery! She has already been released from the hospital, is eating more, has a higher energy-level, and is very relieved to have the operation behind her.  She has also said that she hopes to come be with us at the church plant Bible study as soon as she is able.  Her mom sends her thanks to all who are praying!  Pray that T's recovery continues to go well, and that the Lord uses this in the lives of all involved to draw them to Him.

We're now about half way through the May month of prayer - thank you very much to everyone who is praying along with us!  If you haven't gotten involved yet, it's not too late to join in.  Download the prayer calendar at http://hope4ehu.com/prayer.html, and take a look at the further information given there about the prayer topics for some of the days.

"T" is out of surgery

Praise the Lord, we just got word that T made it through the brain surgery in Budapest & is now in the Intensive Care recovery room.  Her mom, Z, will get to see her sometime this afternoon.  Pray that the doctors were able to accomplish what needed done, and that her condition will improve.  Lift up T, Z, and all the rest of the family and friends, that God will use this in their lives to build trust and faith in Him.

May month of prayer calendar available

May is almost here, and we're gearing up for our annual 31 Days of Prayer for Eastern Hungary! Join us in targeted prayer each day throughout the coming month as we lift up some key towns in our area, several groups of Hungarians beyond our borders, as well as praying for lost friends and new believers.

The prayer calendar is available for download on our website's Prayer page. Feel free to copy it to use with prayer groups, Sunday School classes, or as a bulletin insert.  We hope to soon add links to further information and virtual prayer walks for the towns, so check back with us in May.

In addition to the month of prayer, here are some current praises and prayer requests:

* Praise the Lord, Bruce and Debbie Cobb have found an apartment very near the university, and moved in this week!  Pray for their quick adjustment to life here, and that God will guide their ministry over the next 3 years as they work with English-speaking students in Debrecen.

* Continue to pray for Tiszafüred church plant friend "Z" and her seriously ill daughter "T," who we will be driving to Budapest tomorrow for pre-op testing.  T.  is expected to have a very serious surgery this week. Pray God will give healing, strength and comfort.

* Pray for teammate Kimberly Hathcock, for healing and wisdom in dealing with serious back pain; unless God gives miraculous healing she is facing surgery.

* Praise the Lord with us for the new "Seven Stories of Hope" Bible discussion group in our home. Lift up the friends who are participating, that their hearts will be open to the Good News.

Welcome, Bruce and Debbie!

Delicious Hungarian crêpes for lunch in Budapest
Gary, Bruce and Debbie with view from Castle Hill
Thank you for praying for Bruce and Debbie as they traveled to join us on the Eastern Hungary Team. We are so happy to have them with us!

The Cobbs arrived safely late Sunday night with all of their luggage intact, and after experiencing a little of Budapest on Monday, returned with us to Debrecen. Orientation has begun, and today they will start looking at apartments.  Pray that the Lord will make it clear where they should live, and that soon they'll be able to unpack their things and get settled in.

Pray that Bruce and Debbie's transition to life here will go smoothly as they get to know the area and get a handle on the culture and language; pray that the Lord will give them "divine appointments" with people who will be key in their ministry here, who will open their hearts to the Good News and in turn pass it on to others.

This Thursday's coffeehouse will be a chance for the Cobbs to meet many of the young people our team has been ministering to, so pray for great new relationships to begin.  And since the coffeehouse theme is an Easter party, lift up the conversations that will naturally arise as we talk about the true meaning of this special time.

Countdown to Bruce & Debbie Cobb's arrival

Rejoice with us and pray for our newest team members, Bruce and Debbie Cobb, as they will be arriving in Budapest on Sunday, April 13, at 11:55 p.m. (Hungary time is CST +7).

After a time of orientation, the Cobbs will be using English Bible studies and relationship-building to reach out to international students in Debrecen.  This will complement the work of the Hathcocks, whose focus also includes the Hungarian-speaking students. We are excited and thankful that they will be spending the next three years with us, and we can't wait to see what the Lord will do through them!

Pray that Bruce and Debbie's transition to life in Hungary will go smoothly, and that even now God will be preparing the hearts of those that they will be ministering to.

Here are some specific things you can pray for the Cobbs this week:
  • Pray for Debbie's mom, Elaine Tice, who is recovering from surgery.  She had a cancerous tumor removed from her eyelid, and also had reconstruction to it.  In addition to the surgery, she is also recoving from pneumonia, so she is going through two major challenges right now.
  • Also lift up Debbie's dad, Robert Tice, who has been dealing with a bad cold over the last couple of weeks, and has been caring for his wife after the surgery.
  • Pray for Bruce and Debbie's entire family as they share this last week together prior to their departure to the field.  Pray with them that even with the health concerns, they will still be able to share wonderful family time together, and be able to say all that they want to say, do all that they want to do, and just have good good-byes together.  Debbie noted that good-byes are difficult for their family, as they are VERY close...they prefer to say, "till next time!"
  • Pray for Bruce and Debbie as they tie up all of the "loose ends," that they will remember all that they need to do before leaving on the 12th, and that above all else, that they would remember to put the Lord first and foremost, and continually abide in Him!
  • Bruce and Debbie have been traveling, visiting with family and friends
before departing for their three-year assignment in Hungary

TLTI: Practical training for ministry

TLTI training around the dining room table
As happens everywhere, pastors here are often stretched far beyond their limits in serving the people.  Some work other jobs to support their families, and we have pastor-friends who are responsible for four or five churches in an area, requiring them to travel more than an hour between the towns.

We're excited to partner with Timothy Leadership Training Institute (TLTI) to help provide practical training for church leaders; the workshops teach them how to train their people to join in the ministry of caring for one another.  One of these seminars is being held right now in Debrecen.

Unfortunately, several of those planning to come were unable to attend after all, but great discussion is going on now as I type this post. Since the group was so small, it was relocated from a local church to our dining room...conveniently close to the coffee maker.  :-)

Pray that God will give wisdom as new action plans are being drawn up and acted upon, and that the training will be passed on to others.  Pray that in the future more pastors and church workers will come and participate, and that the Lord will bless them as they implement what they've learned in their churches.

Special request: please lift up TLTI trainer George DeVuyst (at left in photo) and his family, as they live in Ukraine and are being affected by events there.

Pacikert mission church prayer request

Pacikert mission church
Pastor Csaba* from the Pacikert** mission church called today.  Located in the most disadvantaged part of Debrecen, the mission church is working with families who have many needs, and they are doing a lot of teaching and outreach with the children in the neighborhood.

Csaba told us that he and his people have a vision of building a playground on the grounds of the church, which would provide a nice, safe place for the area kids to play.

Pacikert mission children's event in 2012
Csaba asks that we join him in praying that God will guide them as they move forward with this vision, and that He will provide the means to make it a reality soon.

March update

Cherry tree in blossom next to the utility shed in our back yard
Evenings are still cool, but days are now lovely and spring-like here in Hungary, with flowers coming up and trees blossoming.  New things are also developing in the work, and we appreciate your prayers very much.
Trees & bushes showing signs of spring at house across the street

*    Please keep praying for our Tiszafüred church plant friend "Z" and her daughter "T."  "T" will be seeing a Budapest doctor on April 22 to make plans for a very serious brain surgery. The doctors are not hopeful of a good result, so pray God will give wisdom, help, healing, and strength to deal with whatever comes.

*    Pray for several of our friends here who we have been sharing with - they have been showing receptiveness to the gospel message.  Ask the Lord to break down any barriers preventing them from coming to Christ.

*    This Wednesday, April 2, will be the first meeting of a new small group Bible study in our home - "Seven Stories of Hope."  Pray for those who will be coming, and for us and Hungarian friend Eduárd as we guide the conversation.  As we discuss these seven stories of hope from the Scripture we will also be challenging the participants to share what they are learning with other friends who need to find hope, too.

*    Last week Gary and Eduárd met with the pastor and youth pastor of Debrecen Baptist Church to cast the vision of Discipleship Multiplication Training.  Pray for wisdom for them as they think and pray about how this could be used in and by their church. Pray for us as we move forward with starting these new groups in the Debrecen area.

*    Volunteer mission teams are coming and going, doing outreach, teaching, and many other things.  Pray that God will direct them to those whose hearts He has prepared to hear the message, and that many hearts will be turned to Christ.

Thank you for joining with us in lifting up these requests!

Day of Remembrance - the 1848 Revolution

Today the nation of Hungary pauses to remember the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, which grew into a war for independence from Habsburg rule.  Pray that as the people of Hungary think of the heroes and martyrs who fought for freedom, that they will also turn their hearts to the One who came to give true freedom--the kind that can never be taken away.

Regaining strength

Gary and I both got hit by the flu over the past two weeks, and it's been like running in slow motion to get anything done.  Thank you to everyone who prayed for us, even if you didn't know we were sick!  PTL, I believe we are both over the actual bug now, and we are trying to regain strength and get caught up on things.  Will try to write more later.

Urgent prayer requests

An unexpected twist has occurred with our teammates' residence paperwork, and some things need to come together by tomorrow.  Please pray that the Lord will open doors and necessary things will be accomplished in time with minimal complications; pray for safety on the road for D as he travels to pick up needed documents. PTL that the weather is good here today and icy roads are not a danger.

Complications have also arisen with the coffeehouse ministry, and we are praying and working through possible solutions.  Pray for wisdom, good communication, and that God will continue to use this great outreach to His glory.  A few photos from our recent "talent night" are below.

Thanks for your prayers!

Please keep praying

Hello, friends.

I haven't posted in a while, but it's not because life is boring or there's nothing going on....quite the contrary!  Lots on our plates plus some sick days have gotten me behind on things, but I'll try to catch you up on things soon.  Please pray for wisdom for us as we work to stabilize our schedules, to get things back to a more manageable level to maintain health and keep our priorities in place.

We appreciate your prayers very much!

Grain Game takes it to a new level

For several years now the Grain Game foundation has been doing creative, fun Bible camps for the young people in Karcag [KAR tsag]  in partnership with the Hungarian Baptist church there. It has been a joy and blessing to work with them.

As I type this, the foundation president--our good friend Chip Riley--is there doing a follow-up winter party for these kids.  This time he's ramping it up to a new level!  Instead of Bible lessons reinforced with unforgettably crazy games (shaving cream pie in the face, anyone?) they'll be taking a look at some pretty serious, worldview-altering topics.  Slideshows and real-life stories will bring them face-to-face with Grain Game kids like themselves in nations around the world.  Kids with a different skin color, very different backgrounds and life situations, but with the same basic needs.

  • Pray for the Karcag kids as they are confronted with the reality of what it's all about--with the lostness of the world, how God is working, and how they can be involved through prayer and missions.
  • Pray for good communication and wisdom for Chip, for Gary, and for Tom, the kid-loving translator who is helping out.
  • Pray that God will speak to hearts and birth a new passion for following after Christ as never before.

Thank you for being a part of what is happening in Karcag today through your prayers and support!

Coffeehouse is back!

Just a few hours from now the soothing strains of live piano music will set the mood for a new semester of weekly coffeehouse events here in Debrecen. Pray that tonight will be a great time of re-connecting after the holidays, and that the Lord will use the conversations to soften hearts and draw people into relationship with Him.

For more information and photos of past events see "Connections Debrecen" on either Facebook or Google+.
